How to Add Your Own Music to Spotify

Have you ever found a rare remix, an unreleased demo, or a personal track stored on your computer that isn’t available anywhere on Spotify’s streaming library? Fortunately, you don’t have to leave those songs out of your daily rotation.

Using Spotify’s built-in Local Files feature, you can easily pull your personal audio files straight into your Spotify library, mix them into your favorite custom playlists, and listen to them on the go.

Step 1: Set Up Local Files on Your Computer

The easiest way to get your music onto Spotify is by using a Windows or Mac computer.

  1. Open the Spotify desktop app (this feature does not work on the web browser player).
  2. Click on your profile picture or icon in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. Scroll down until you find the Your Library section.
  4. Toggle on the switch that says Show Local Files.
  5. Click the Add a source button that appears right below it.
  6. Choose the folder on your computer where your music files are saved (such as your standard Downloads or Music folder).

Once selected, a new playlist titled Local Files will automatically appear in your sidebar, populated with all of your compatible audio tracks.

Quick Checklist for File Types:
Spotify supports standard audio formats like MP3, MP4, and M4P (though MP4 video files are not supported). If your files are in formats like FLAC or WAV, you may need to convert them to MP3 first.

Step 2: Add Your Songs to a Playlist

To make your imported tracks easier to organize and play:

  1. Open your new Local Files folder in Spotify.
  2. Create a brand-new playlist or right-click your custom tracks to add them to any existing playlist.
  3. You can now treat these tracks just like regular Spotify songs—add them to your queue, heart them, or rearrange them.

Step 3: Listen on Your Phone (iOS & Android)

Want to blast your custom tracks from your smartphone? You can sync them over seamlessly:

  • For Android Users: Open the Spotify mobile app, go to Settings and privacy, look for Apps and devices (or Import), and toggle on Local audio files. Make sure your phone and computer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, open the playlist containing your local tracks, and hit the Download button.
  • For iOS (iPhone/iPad) Users: Go to Settings and privacy > Apps and devices, and switch on Local audio files. You can also drop files directly into the designated Spotify folder via the iOS Files app if needed.

Pro-Tips for a Smooth Setup

  • Check Your Filenames: Keep your song titles clean, simple, and free of weird special characters so Spotify can read them without a hitch.
  • Troubleshooting Missing Tracks: If your songs look grayed out or won’t play, double-check that the source folder hasn’t been moved or renamed on your computer, and ensure both devices are updated to the latest version of Spotify.
