The Roots of a Star: A Look into Song Kang’s Early Life and Childhood

Long before he earned the title of South Korea’s undisputed “Son of Netflix” and captured global hearts in hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just an ordinary, active boy growing up in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do.

While fans today know him for his effortless on-screen charisma and striking visuals, his childhood offers a fascinating glimpse into the formative experiences that subtly shaped the actor and individual he is today.

An Athletic and Artistic Household

Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in a household deeply immersed in both sports and the arts. Athletics ran heavily in his family’s blood: his father was a professional artistic gymnast, and gymnastics lineage extended to other family members as well. Growing up surrounded by this athletic discipline meant that physical movement, sports, and staying active were a natural part of his daily routine.

On the flip side, balance came from his mother, who worked as a piano teacher. Because of her profession, Song Kang was introduced to music at a very young age. He learned to play the piano directly from his mother and even secured multiple awards in regional piano competitions during his elementary school years. Though youthful frustration initially led him to step away from the keyboard for a time, this early musical foundation unexpectedly came full circle years later when he had to relearn the instrument for a drama role.

Growing Up with a Younger Brother

Song Kang is the older of two siblings, sharing his childhood with a younger brother born in 1998. Like many pairs of brothers, their relationship evolved from typical sibling banter into a close, supportive friendship as they grew older. While Song Kang would eventually step into the high-pressure spotlight of the entertainment industry, his early years were grounded in a relatively conventional, tightly knit family environment alongside his brother and parents.

Discovering a Passion for Cinema

Despite growing up surrounded by gymnastics and music, Song Kang didn’t immediately settle on a career path. In his youth, he enjoyed a variety of typical hobbies—ranging from playing computer games and reading to going for casual drives.

The turning point that steered him toward acting came during his adolescence and young adulthood, heavily catalyzed by watching films. Notably, Hollywood legend Leonardo DiCaprio served as a major inspiration, sparking Song Kang’s deep fascination with the craft of transforming into different characters and expressing complex human emotions. Driven by this newfound ambition, he pursued formal training, eventually enrolling in the Department of Film Arts at the prestigious Konkuk University to lay the groundwork for his professional career.

From Uncharted Beginnings to Stardom

Before landing his breakthrough acting roles, Song Kang’s striking looks and tall frame caught the attention of various talent scouts. He was famously approached by multiple idol agencies who wanted to train him as a K-pop star. However, he turned them down, remaining steadfast in his singular dream of becoming an actor.

That perseverance paid off when he made his official acting debut in 2017, eventually paving the way for his meteoric rise to international fame. Looking back, the quiet discipline of his father’s athletic background, the early creative discipline instilled by his mother’s piano lessons, and a childhood grounded in ordinary sibling dynamics all combined to build the resilient, versatile artist we see today.
