Before he became the global “Son of Netflix” and a reigning icon of modern K-dramas, Song Kang’s life looked entirely different. Long before headlining blockbuster series like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, the towering actor was a quiet, unassuming young man navigating uncertainty, artistic roots, and a pivotal crossroads that could have easily taken him down a very different path.
An Artistic Household and a Shy Childhood
Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song grew up in a family naturally attuned to physical discipline and expression. His father was an artistic gymnast, while his mother worked as a piano teacher. Despite growing up surrounded by athleticism and melody, Song was not an outgoing child clamoring for the spotlight.
In fact, he was remarkably introverted during his school years. Far from being the class theatrical lead, he was naturally shy and preferred blending into the background. In past interviews, he confessed that he often felt deeply embarrassed when all eyes were on him, even intentionally choosing corner seats during school meals to avoid drawing attention. When he first toyed with the idea of acting, even his mother gently questioned how someone so naturally quiet could ever survive in front of a camera.
The Cinematic Spark and Architectural Dreams
Before acting captured his imagination, Song’s early ambitions pointed toward design. He originally dreamed of becoming an architect or a furniture designer. However, as he transitioned into his late teens, those aspirations faded, and he admitted to feeling genuinely lost with “no idea where he needed to start”.
The turning point arrived when he watched James Cameron’s legendary film Titanic. Struck by the profound emotional resonance of cinematic storytelling and the power of inhabiting entirely different lives, he felt an internal spark. Overpowering his natural shyness, he decided to pivot toward the performing arts, eventually enrolling in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University to lay the groundwork for a professional career.
Turning Down the Idol Track
With his striking features, impressive height (186 cm), and undeniable screen presence, talent scouts naturally took notice. During his pre-debut days, Song received multiple casting offers from K-pop entertainment agencies.
In an era where many aspiring actors readily accept trainee contracts to break into the industry via idol groups, Song stood his ground. He turned down the offers, deliberately choosing to bypass the grueling multi-year idol trainee system. His heart was set entirely on traditional acting—a risk that required immense patience and trust in a longer, less predictable grind.
Building Momentum: The Bridge to 2017
Moving to Seoul for university marked another milestone. Living alone for the first time, he cultivated a habit of writing daily diaries to soothe his solitude—a reflective practice he maintained into his rookie years to process his strengths and shortcomings.
He eventually signed with Namoo Actors, a prestigious agency home to top-tier film and television stars. In March 2017, his perseverance officially paid off when he made his small-screen debut in the tvN series The Liar and His Lover.
Though his early steps were modest, they paved the way for his rapid ascent—transitioning from an introverted student sitting quietly in a school cafeteria into one of the most recognizable and magnetic faces in Asian entertainment.
